History Brown Bag: Sixteen Years on the Great American Desert

The Historic Preservation Commission sponsors the History Brown Bag program. The topic of the September 23 event is about Union Colony settler Anna M. Green. Noel and Linda Johnston are the presenters for this event.

“Sixteen Years on the Great American Desert: The Trials and Triumphs of a Frontier Life”
This presentation by the Johnstons is an adaptation of “Sixteen Years on the Great American Desert: The Trials and Triumphs of a Frontier Life” from the book of that name by  Anna M. Green, an original Union Colony settler.  Anna lived here with her husband William and family from 1870 to 1886, and after several years of absence, until William’s death in 1899 and Anna’s passing in 1913. Mrs. Green, known affectionately as “Annie” by her husband and friends, moved here from Franklin, Pennsylvania. William had heard New York Tribune editor Horace Greeley’s call to “Go west, young man, and grow up with the country,” and though Annie was hesitant to leave lush and verdant Franklin for the dry and prickly unknown plains of Colorado, come she did.
