Carl Bork will present his exhibit “Manifest” at the Tointon Gallery, 651 10th Ave. The exhibit will be on display Friday, January 10 through Saturday, February 22. “Manifest” presents a departure from what Bork is most famous for, landscape paintings. In returning to his roots, portrait painting, he has found a heightened appreciation for abstraction and an expanded sensitivity for what emotions color and texture convey to the viewer.
When creating “Manifest,” Bork explains that he did not want the work to be self-contained to one emotion or one idea. “I wanted to be honest with myself and let whatever feelings and concepts I have come out in the work.” The exhibit represents a wide range of emotions from some paintings being bright and happy to others more dark and mysterious. Bork has discovered the power of personal expression and wishes to communicate the thoughts that lie within his subconscious. The byproduct even surprises himself, for when he begins to work on a piece, he isn’t quite sure what will appear, he simply lets whatever feelings and concepts he has come out in his artwork.
Born in Ohio, Bork grew up drawing with the encouragement of friends and family early on. It was not until high school that he began drawing from life. Bork began his formal training in painting at the Columbus College of Art and Design. The school’s rigorous coursework provided him the basis for his drawing and painting. Currently, Bork resides in Salida, CO where he opened his own studio/gallery in 2010.
A reception is scheduled for First Friday, on Friday, January 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. Admission to the gallery is free and visitors may view the exhibit when the Tointon Gallery is open. The Gallery is open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and during many of the performances at the Union Colony Civic Center.
